A new age in education is giving students the opportunity to engage in discussions with peers from around the world. In this video, the students themselves say that receiving feedback from students their own age is more authentic (because they get where they are coming from) and it simply makes them feel good. This is in comparison to the teacher feedback that tells students what they need to fix. By creating a virtual world where students have the ability to connect with peers, they extend the learning outside the classroom walls and create a meaningful and personalized product (because it's out there digitally forever). This type of learning and doing is an authentic way we can help students to discover new ways of thinking and "doing school". The teacher in this video says his students work harder and have more focus when they have to deal with a real or virtual audience. Using technology, we can help motivate and the connect is one way we as educators can help to engage our students in the curriculum and in return increases the quality of their product. My goal is to try to implement an opportunity for my students to have an authentic audience online. To do this I have to take the time to connect with teachers from around the world or other parts of the US to find ways to help facilitate those connections and audiences. Publishing our students work online has the ability to introduce new experience and alternative views on the same content. Facilitating a blog gives all students a voice, those that do not feel comfortable with speaking in front of the entire class now have the freedom to write and respond in a stress-free environment. Students are able to make connections with other students that have no background knowledge or history unlike students that are sitting next to one another therefore making the feedback they receive real and unbiased. Publishing students work can make a huge impact that can help all our students make academic progress. I definitely want to build a platform for my students to begin publishing their work when I have my own classroom.
