Survival Skills in My Science Class:
QUESTIONS
I do agree with Wagner and his first survival skill and how important it is for teachers to plan for and ask good questions (I admit this is a skill I work on daily, asking questions that require more than just a one word answer but I would like to also include my students and hold them accountable for asking question. I would love my students to question the science and question me more. I would like every student to ask why or how at least one time in my class daily. I could only imagine the conversations and discussions!
COLLABORATE & COMMUNICATE
I agree with Wagner's second survival skill about collaboration and communication. In my classroom I provide many opportunities for my students to collaborate, communicate and work in teams to solve problems after all this is science and we should learn to discover together!
BE FLEXIBLE
I agree with Wagner that flexibility is key to creating a student centered classroom where the teacher is adapting and adjusting the lesson as needed. In that same context I believe our students also have to learn how to be flexible and adaptable and learn how to appreciate and accept their peers comments and suggestions, especially when problem solving in my science classroom.
ANALYZE INFORMATION
It is imperative because of the internet and the vast amount of information out there that our students learn how to analyze and interpret data. Students need to lean how to sift through the information that is out there and be able to analyze what is real versus fake.
FAILURE IS A GOOD THING
So many of my students see only what is 2 inches in front of them...and they lack the ability to see beyond that, see that they have their entire future to look forward to. I really want my students to learn how to see failure as a great thing, instead of failing and giving up.
HAVE FUN
I think many classrooms around the nation have eliminated anytime for students just to have fun. Simply stated: play. I'm thinking of my own two kids and how much they learn by playing and I think we could implement more opportunities for our students to have fun in the classroom...while learning of course!
COMMUNITY
This goes along with one of Wagner's survival skill of students being innovators for change and improvements within their community (inside the school and outside school).
