My end goal (successful outcome): By the end of the semester I will be able to successfully sew my two daughters and myself a skirt (not matching as that might be weird.) :)
Why sewing?: My 9 year old daughter has always had an interest in sewing and I have always said that I wish I knew how to sew to teach her...so what a better project than my daughter and I learning how to sew together! Sounds like the perfect way to spend 20% of my time this semester, with my daughter, learning and creating something together. T
Play and Failure: There will be many opportunities for me to fail because I have very limited experience ever sewing and the little experience I do have was 20+ years ago. This will be a great learning/teaching opportunity for my daughter to see me struggle, adjust and modify and continue on until reaching my final goal. This will also be a fun experience for my daughter and I to do together!
How I will accomplish my goal (tools): I will be utilizing YouTube, friends and family to guide my learning. Also, my mother-in-law has a sewing machine and a few starting supplies such as thread that I will be able to use for this project.
Inquiry Questions to Guide My Learning:
1. Will the skirt I make for myself and my daughters look as good or better than buying one at a store?
2. How will do I set up the machine? (Who am I kidding, this should have been #1!)
3. How long will it take me to finish all three skirts?
4. Should I use a pattern from the store or one from the internet or none?
5. Out of all the resources I plan to explore which one will I use the most and why? (YouTube, books, blogs, my mother-in-law, etc)
6. How much money will it cost me from the beginning to end of the semester?
7. Where is the best place to buy fabric around the Carlsbad area?
8. Is there easier fabric to start with than others (or more specifically is there a type of fabric I should avoid)?
9. At the end of the 20% project will I purchase my own sewing machine?
10. Will my daughter and I continue sewing as a hobby together after the 20% project?
11. What was the best aspect about completing the 20% project?
*This 20% idea came from a conservation with Tiffany Arnaldo last Monday.
